I chose the topic of “the role of Latin@s in the election” because it combines both of my majors, Spanish and Journalism. That being said, this was probably the most difficult journalism assignment I’ve ever done, but it was also one of the most intriguing ones.
I’ve never been able to combine my two majors into one project, so I enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the culture of Latin@s in the election. Given the low population of Latin@s in Wisconsin, the hardest part was finding people to interview. Once I got my interviews, I got some good insights for my story. The main takeaway is that Latin@s know what matters to them and will vote for the candidate that will best handle their issues.
I wish I had been able to do some of my interviews in Spanish; however, I got the vibe from my interviewees that they didn’t really want to speak to me in Spanish.
The best part about this assignment is that I am so much more informed on the election than I would have been without it — in all regards, even outside of my topic of Latin@s.
